“I was destined to take root in France. I know that now, even if I didn't know it back when I had the dream.” Seventeen-year-old Jennie Goutet has a dream that she will one day marry a Frenchman. When she turns 19, she sets off to France and begins her search for her dream man in Avignon. A Lady in France is her memoir, detailing her journey across the continent from France, Asia, East Africa, and New York before back to France and settling down. Goutet’s mission work in Africa is one of the thought-provoking parts of her journey.
This memoir is unquestionably charming and beautifully crafted, yet fragile at the same time. The memoir is written in witty but honest prose, with Bible verses woven flawlessly into the pages. By no means do the verses make the book preachy; spiritual is the correct term to express how this memoir, as a whole, appeals to me. Personally, I find this is the core strength of Goutet’s memoir. The other payoffs in reading A Lady in France are the vivid details of Goutet’s journey in foreign countries, the people that she meets and the valuable experience that she gets. We also follow her life-changing events, such as her marriage to her French husband and motherhood.
She openly shares with us her memories of love, grief, loss and her personal dark moments in battling depression before she finds salvation. Simply put, Jennie Goutet’s memoir draws you in. I highly recommend A Lady in France, a thoughtful and vividly written memoir of a life journey.
