Author Robert J. Reid in his book A Journey of Cancer, A Journey of Faith gives a wonderful story concerning his wife Kris’ cancer and how she learned to deal with the process. He wrote this book both to help with his grieving process as well as to encourage and help others who may be going through similar circumstances. The story tells of the initial diagnosis and how Kris begins the battle against cancer. She has many physical, emotional and spiritual issues all going on at the same time. Kris not only had one battle with cancer but a second and a third. A highlight within the material was when Lorraine told the author “…God answers what we ask for.” This led him to believe that not asking for the complete cure caused time to be extended but not a full, complete cure. He writes: “…God answers what we pray for. Don’t low-ball your request, ask for the whole thing, the complete cure. What have you got to lose?”
Reid lists several suggestions throughout the book that would be helpful to someone assisting a person with cancer. These suggestions are precious and if used appropriately could help when taking care of the patient. While the book is disturbing from the fact of the sickness and difficulty, it is well written because it does share true life examples of what someone has gone through with this dread disease. It also shows the impact that cancer has on the family members and how they could benefit from reading this book should a family member of theirs be going through a similar situation. This book would be an excellent resource for the American Cancer Society, support groups, and local libraries to have a copy available to help others.
