When Rose Morningstar’s father dies and leaves her and her sisters alone in the world, they are at the mercy of their estranged third cousin – Michael Morningstar, the new Earl of Rothberg. When he tries to make Rose his wife, she doesn’t initially refuse as her duty is to keep her sisters safe. Yet, when he tries to make her his wife in name and deed before the wedding, she refuses. The three sisters are promptly thrown from the London home to fend for themselves. Luckily, Captain Colin MacFarland has agreed to give them safe passage to Glasgow, Scotland, to see their aunt. Rose quickly finds the solution to her problems in the Captain. She’s found a man who is honorable and can provide her with a life of happiness and, hopefully, love. Will she be able to convince him that she’s just as right for him?
A Highlander to Have and to Hold by Tammy Andresen is book two in the Brides of Scotland series. It’s no secret that I am a fan of Tammy Andresen and this book lived up to her other books, even if it was rather short. The main characters are immediately lovable but their flaws are clear and make them human. Their strengths and fears are relatable years after the Regency era and outside of a fiction story. As much as I enjoyed the main characters, I also quite liked the supporting characters as I found them particularly relatable. They’re sassy, sweet, hard, soft, and all intent on supporting one another. Despite Rose and her sisters leaving England entirely, you can see them starting to develop a new family. It is amazing how much was packed into this compact book.
