I must confess, I was first attracted to Fernando Torres’ new novel, A Habit of Resistance, by the cover. Gun-toting nuns in full habits; what could be better? Having been raised Catholic, this story was one I simply could not resist. And the book did not disappoint. Following an eccentric group of nuns who start with a small gun club, mainly to learn a little about guns for self-protection, and evolving into fully-fledged members of the French resistance during WWII, I found myself completely engrossed in this story.
The newest novitiate to the mother house, Sister Noele, is challenged when her fiancé, Rene, has returned to her from Paris. Sister Marie, Noele’s guide, tries to help her come to terms with her feelings, and help her to decide what path is the right one for her. All of this is happening as the stressors of WWII are circling the globe, and the nuns are certainly not immune. Attempting to determine just what their roles should be, in God’s eyes and man’s, these unconventional sisters need to figure out just who they are, and who they should be.
A Habit of Resistance was a fun read. Fast-paced, full of intrigue and excitement, it kept me turning the pages from cover to cover. Any lover of fiction would enjoy this book, and those with a personal background or interest in Catholicism or the Church will love it even more. Laugh out loud funny in parts, this book was hard to put down. I am pleased to enthusiastically endorse A Habit of Resistance by Fernando Torres to any reader looking for a wonderfully joyful read.
