Have you ever wondered if there are advanced alien civilizations somewhere far away from us? What would they think of the human species if they could observe us from their worlds? This scenario is played out in this thought experiment by Turtle, with A Grading of the Human Species. In his narrative, a hypothetical A-Type civilization from a faraway galaxy observes the human species throughout the last 250 years of the modern age, spanning the Industrial, Informational, and Technological eras. The Human Species is graded in the Categories of Technology, Economy, Entertainment, Health, Management of Life's Stresses, Mental State, Equality, Preparing the Young, and Planet Maintenance. Needless to say, humans are a flawed species, and sometimes, our self-destructive tendencies do overwhelm our better nature. Yet we have the potential to turn things around, but only if we want to.
A Grading of the Human Species is a thought-provoking essay on humanity, its triumphs, and failures, as seen by an outside observer from a hypothetical A-Type civilization. Turtle sheds light on the brilliant technological advancements humans have made over the past century or two and juxtaposes them with economic, lifestyle, social, and environmental failures that prevent us from fulfilling our potential. Issues such as inequality, economic disparity, poverty, unemployment, pollution, climate change, and many more are still plaguing humanity, with humans being the root cause of almost all of them. It provides an illuminating look into our species' strengths, flaws, and potential. Highly recommended.
