A Gentile Jester in the King's Court: God Stories from Israel by R.L. Barker is a fascinating account of the author’s experience of Israel, the “Beloved of God.” The journalist-turned-pastor takes readers on a thrilling ride through the “Land of Promise” and offers very vivid pictures, including the shadowy depths of Yad Vashem, the museum of the Holocaust, the breathtaking scenery of Galilee, and the beautiful views from the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. The author shares his stories and offers powerful biblical and historical insights, allowing the reader to relive the history of Israel, to walk the path the Savior walked in His earthly life, and to appreciate the contemporary culture of the people.
R.L. Barker has an accessible style of writing which combines his uncanny storytelling skills with humor to give great entertainment to readers. Here is a book that can be read as a travel guide for anyone planning to visit the Promised Land or a book of interesting stories from a pastor’s sojourn in Israel. I enjoyed the way the author captures the setting, allowing readers wonderful and gorgeous views of the land. Readers will also enjoy the interaction with other characters on this trip and will learn to look at Israel from a completely different perspective. The narrative voice is so strong it is hard to resist, and the prose flows gracefully, sprinkled with wonderful descriptions of the setting and intense moments. A Gentile Jester in the King's Court: God Stories from Israel is both informative and entertaining, a book that pilgrims will love to read before setting out for the Promised Land.
