A Discerning Heart by Patty Lesser is an adventure story that is also part fantasy, part historical fiction, and part romance. The story is set in a fictional village that thrives on the coastal fishing community. Jim Moore, also know as Dim Jim, is the story's protagonist. In fact, the story revolves around his life, wants and desires. A fisherman, Dim Jim wants more than that life. He wants wealth and power, and craves the love and acceptance he fears he will never have. Merrow is a mermaid with her own personal issues. Selfish and childish, she is a natural character for Jim to fall in love with and they throw away their respective lives to act upon their feelings. Adventure is upon them, but can the two overcome the reactions of their families and society to experience the love that they have always wanted?
This is an interesting story because the two main characters are so flawed. They are not perfect by any means, but they are so well written that readers can't help but fall in love with them. Readers will root for them and champion their cause, even though the characters are selfish and make poor decisions throughout the novel. I think this really makes the characters seem more real. They come alive on the page precisely because they aren't perfect, and readers will appreciate the fact that they make mistakes and yet get second chances to make things right in their lives.
