A Demon’s Quest - The Beginning of the End by Charles Carfagno Jr. is an epic fantasy adventure that begins with Gilex setting the ground work for his plans to awaken the Blood Knights and use them for the good of mankind. The next section introduces Repan, the self-proclaimed Lord of the Mind. With his powers of illusion and magic, he plans on ruling the region. Then the story switches back and forth between two friends, Torhan and Jacko. Jacko is a monk from the order of the White Fist. When Jacko’s return from his promotion contest is delayed, Torhan is manipulated into performing an errand for the mysterious Lord Grappin. Armed with an enchanted sword and dagger, he gets caught up in a whirlwind ride of adventures befitting the brand of Dungeon & Dragons.
Charles Carfagno’s characters are all unique and well described, from different species of fanatical humanoids, monstrous insects, magic, and swordplay to explicitly described martial arts. As a dungeon master of three decades, I was thoroughly entertained. I could easily visualize the rolls of the dice for saving throws when things didn't go in favor of our heroes. Your heart goes out to a character on an urgent mission with a time limit, when he loses his memory after hitting his head during an escape. I like my books smart, well written, gripping, full of action, and with a sense of humor. A Demon's Quest fires on all cylinders from the first page and leaves you wanting more. This is a must-read for D&D and fantasy fans.
