A Child’s Journey Through Poetry - Vol. 2: Hobbies, Skills and Talents is a collection of poems inspired by hobbyists and professionals in the community. Sabinah Adewole cataloged her poems in a useful way so that the reader can easily see the title and other themes. They can therefore choose a poem that resonates with them or perhaps a poem that goes well with the lesson they are teaching. There are a total of fifty poems, each accompanied by images. Adewole included when, where, and what inspired her at the end of each poem, which gave the poetry another life. I would read a poem and then picture her writing in her home. My favorite poem was also Skateboarder which was inspired by Sky Brown, a brave and talented young girl skateboarder from Japan.
I thought the layout of A Child’s Journey Through Poetry - Vol. 2 was neat and consistent. I liked it when real images were used as opposed to Clipart. I haven’t read the first volume, but I would definitely recommend this book for primary school teachers, creative writing tutors, or even counselors. I think Sabinah Adewole models a sort of free expression and joy in her writing that is inspiring. I would love to see more from this author on the structure of her poetry. There is a worksheet included at the end of the book which was thoughtful. All in all, I appreciated the authenticity and intention in Sabinah Adewole’s writing and would recommend this book to educators and parents of school-age children.
