Leonie Conyngham is an unaffected woman placed in an English boarding school in the early 1800's. As she is about to leave the school to "join society" as a young woman of wealth, her father dies and is placed in a scandalous light, leaving Leonie penniless and in need of assistance.
The young woman is offered an entry position in the boarding school and, as she is without options, she accepts, only to find herself placed in an unconscionable position, in which three women engage in various manipulative machinations in order to put her into further disfavor. Ms. Conyngham has several suitors vying for her attention and they have malicious intention as well.
The plot is enhanced by the entrance of Sir Guy deLacy`s niece, who appears to be the only other rational character besides Ms. Conyngham. The twelve year old child has visions of her own, as she attempts to bring together Leonie and her uncle, who is pledged in marriage to one of the perpetrators who is working to thwart the good reputation of Leonie Conyngham.
The author is a master of descriptive setting and character information and this enhances an already intriguing plot. She remains true to the period, in both setting and in dialogue, making "A Change of Fortune" a delightful read for all fans of historic fiction/romance.
