Understanding that God won’t give us more than we can handle is at the heart of A Call to Love by Rebecca Sundberg. Maddy Walker’s life was turned upside down when her husband Lane rushed into a burning barn to save a neighbor’s little girl. Through God’s grace and the kindness of her family and neighbors, Maddy began to heal from her loss. Through God’s guidance, she turned her own inner pain outward to help others in her community. As she struggles with a new relationship with Ryan, a police officer, she feels led to help a single mother with two children, one of which is a very wild teen walking along the edge of trouble. Added into the mix is the sudden discovery of an illness which would one day leave Dani, her daughter, alone. Wanting to withdraw and tend to her own health and her daughter’s future, she is still being nudged by God to befriend a particularly angry woman, Isobelle Davis. God’s grace begins to transform all involved as Maddy’s obedience to God’s call to love her neighbors takes seed and begins to produce fruit.
Rebecca Sundberg has done an awesome job of illustrating how God stretches us to move out of our comfort zone and beyond what we believe we can handle in A Call to Love. Rebecca has created the perfect characters to make this illustration come to life in a very real way. Each character adds a new challenge which God’s grace must overcome through Maddy’s obedience to reach out to others. The stark difference of the practical world is portrayed in the character of Ryan, who sees things in a very common sense way and gives what is excellent advice, but is not always the way that God wants things to be done. “His ways are not always our ways.” Realistic, triumphant and inspiring, A Call to Love is a testimony to the faithfulness of God as He guides us into circumstances that we do not fully understand, but we move forward solely by faith.
