Author Biography

I grew up in a rural area west of Chicago – with its open prairies and muddy marshes, the natural world awakened my spirit and piqued my curiosity. It was here I fell in love with all things Nature! Part of my passion for writing involves inspiring and uplifting others to the magic and wonders of the natural world.

"A Bug-Lightful Discovery" was inspired by my neighbor's granddaughter when we encountered a big ole beetle! After our encounter, I knew I had a message to convey to the world that "everything has a purpose whether we know it or not". And with the little help from a few bugs, I beleive this book captures that perfectly.

A Bug-lightful Discovery by Karen B. Shea is about a girl who likes killing bugs for fun. Standing on Ms. Z’s porch one sunny day, Emelia and her sisters spot an unusual beetle. While Ellery and Jacqueline stare in curious awe, Emelia is ready to pounce on the bug, but Ms. Z stops Emelia. Emelia protests when Ms. Z stops her from stomping on the bug, and Ms. Z responds that the bug has a purpose and deserves to live. Emelia is not pleased with Ms. Z’s answer, so she storms home, relentlessly trying to step on any insects she encounters on her way. At bedtime, Emelia relates her experience to her Gramma Jane, and Gramma gives her a book about bugs, with an assignment to find the bugs that live in the area. This book leads Emelia to many bug-lightful discoveries.

I am often amazed by what I learn from children’s books, and A Bug-lightful Discovery by Karen B. Shea did not disappoint. I was most impressed to learn that spider webs offer good building materials for small birds' nests. I used to think their sticky webs were just for trapping prey. I love the message of this book, and that it shows the importance of insects. I also liked the words used; they could improve a child’s vocabulary. Another lovely aspect of this book is the illustrations by Luella Jane Wright. The illustrations were beautiful and colorful, and they captured the characters’ expressions so well. I truly enjoyed this little book, and I recommend it.
