A Bit of a Laugh by Ben Tiffen is a wonderful and fun insight into the world of stand-up comedy, based on the author's own personal experiences and his journey in the world of comedy. Tiffen gives an honest and straight-to-the-point account of starting out in an unknown field and all the challenges he encountered while progressing to becoming a professional-level comic. A Bit of a Laugh will make you laugh, worry, and cry while reading it, at the same time offering loads of advice on life, new beginnings, self-confidence, and the effort one puts in to reach one's goals. A very inspiring and fast-paced read, this book will make you want to start something new yourself!
Ben Tiffen is an inspiring and skillful storyteller, which is why his story feels so relatable. What I liked the most is how the author incorporates historical facts about comedy into his own experiences of the craft, which gives this novel another layer, an educational and knowledgeable one. That, among other things, made me want to know more about stand-up comedy in general. Tiffen's inspiration for the craft comes from learning from the work of a lot of famous comedians from around the globe, Seinfeld being one of the most important ones. Growing up watching Seinfeld's show, I immediately connected to Tiffen's inspiration, and the familiarity that kicks in while reading A Bit of a Laugh makes this book an even more enjoyable read.
