After he had searched fruitlessly for a devotional with the names of God, Chris Solaas wrote the devotional, 365 Names of God. Each daily entry explores a verse of scripture with a reference to God, an assignment to read that portion of the Bible, a short piece pertaining to it, a prayer, and, sometimes, a picture to bring more clarity to the verse of the day. Starting alphabetically with Abba on January 1 and ending with Zealous on December 31, the author provides proof that God is and has been active and available in His children's lives. With relatable references and information relating to worship, the author seeks to deepen his readers' knowledge about our Heavenly Father.
While revealing the names of God through scriptural references, Chris Solaas enlightens readers about the roots of God's names and how we can apply that information to our lives. I have made references to God in many ways, but I was most surprised to learn He has three hundred sixty-five names. God's references aren't always direct. At times, they are more like descriptions, like Abiding One, Authority, and Shield, showing His actions and ongoing love. Solaas relates part of himself in some devotions and makes comparisons to human fathers and God, encouraging earthly fathers to be more available to their children. The author has placed pictures skillfully, where they will produce the greatest impact. The format of the devotionals is clear, and the text is straightforward. Readers will finish 365 Names of God with greater knowledge about and a firmer connection to their Creator after their prayerful reflections.
