“Earth is awakening to claim her destiny. We walk among the stars, among the legends, where no other human has walked, in the name of all those who perished, in the name of the Terran Industrial Alliance, in the name of our Kings and Countries, and in the name of all Humanity." K.T. Hunter's 20 Million Leagues Over the Sea (Book One of The Nemo Paradox) is a sci-fi steampunk novel that centers on the starship, Thunder Child's Fury. In 1901, Martians invaded Earth. When the invasion ended, TIA (Terran Industrial Alliance) confiscated all the Martian technology it could salvage in order to research it and re-engineer it for human use. There are surprising secrets to be discovered as the crew carries their mission into space.
It was a slow start for me, but the steampunk world building is undeniably impressive and imaginative, particularly the ship, Thunder Child's Fury. Hunter gives us quite a scenario on how different our world would be if aliens ever had invaded our planet in the early 20th century. The inspiration of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells is evident. Geologist Gemma Llewellyn is easy to root for. She has her own unique qualities compared to other strong female leads in the sci-fi genre, which fascinated me from the beginning. Her first encounter with the tomboyish Caroline McLure (who’s also one of my favorite characters) was fun to read. Readers will definitely gravitate toward one special crew member simply named Maggie. On the whole, this is an enjoyable and ingenious read from Hunter.
