Alyssa Charpentier's 19 Reaching 90 is a collection of poems that evokes meditative thoughts. It is devoted to the young and restless souls who look at the world with mature eyes. The opening poem, 19 Reaching 90, is a beautiful narration of how the smile remains untouched even though a body is betrayed by time. In the poem Lady Girl, the poet has examined the perils endured by women. It features a woman's troubles and the solace they find in all the unladylike things. Similarly, other compositions reach out to connect with individuals. The poems are an arresting blend of satire, positivity, drama, and a bottomless lyrical beauty.
Alyssa Charpentier's 19 Reaching 90 communicates the innermost thoughts that everyone feels and experiences. It uses words to relate someone else's thoughts, ideas, and struggles, conveying its meaning beautifully. Alyssa has used a thoughtful but ironic tone while playing with the words to pass on a coherent message, and the writing style is elegant and clever. In the poem Little Me, the poet writes about a time that is lost now. It was an era when we didn't have any modern conveniences and were unaware of world affairs. Now everything happens so fast. The words in the poem hold a power that urges reflective thinking.
The language and the style are well-structured, and there was no single format used in all of them. Some poems had a rhyme scheme, while others were free-verse poetry. Each poem had a different theme and therefore presented a diversity of thoughts. Alyssa has neatly assigned the poetic devices that add grace to them. It is a fine example of well-written modern prose poetry. Alyssa Charpentier's 19 Reaching 90 is a definite recommendation for those who love reading deep and meaningful poetry.
