Music has a way to speak to the soul and from the heart. Throughout history, music has been influenced by world events and, in turn, has also influenced world events. In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, popular music, primarily vocalist, challenged the way people saw the world. Sometimes, as in the case of Nina Simone who wrote music to support the Civil Rights Movement, the artist’s challenging music resulted in a partial or total ban on their work. That didn’t stop the musicians from composing and performing. Music is a powerful weapon that can and often does change the world.
Jamie Kallio’s nonfiction children’s book, 12 Musicians Who Changed the World, focuses on twelve musicians, all vocalists in varying forms of contemporary, popular music of the twentieth and twenty-first century. The artists chosen for this collection include Aretha Franklin, Patsy Cline, Nina Simone, Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, Adele, Prince, Bob Marley, Bod Dylan, Elvis Presley, David Bowie, and Tupac Shakur, the last one being defined as a poet from the streets. Each musician is introduced with a short biography, a title that cleverly defines something unique about them, interesting sidebars with relevant points on the musician’s life and music, and some suggested activities to further the young reader’s interest in musicians. Each presentation also includes photographs of the artist. The end of the book includes a glossary of musical terms used as well as suggested musicians to further study. Jamie Kallio’s 12 Musicians Who Changed the World is an excellent resource to encourage young readers to appreciate the music of our time and to understand how music can and does change the world and how we think.
