Zeke Sees a Bug is a story based on a real dog rescued from an animal shelter by the author, Kelly Robertson. The beautiful illustrations by John Konecny are conclusive proof that, whatever had happened in the past, Zeke fell on his paws in his new home with the Robertsons; in every picture he is sleeping on their bed! At first, he’s taking a peaceful nap, but he is disturbed by a bug crawling up the outside of the bedroom window and down again. This is interesting, amusing even, until the bug comes to investigate Zeke and flies around buzzing in a very annoying way. Zeke succeeds in catching it under one of his big paws, but what does he do next? He could kill it, or he could let it go.

Zeke Sees a Bug by Kelly Robertson is a super picture book to read to young children, especially as a bedtime story since it ends with Zeke fast asleep. There’s plenty of time for a child to look at each coloured drawing; words on the pages vary from one, “Thwomp”, to nine. I particularly liked the repetition. “The bug plods up the window. Plink, plink plink,” and “The bug plods down the window. Plonk, plonk, plonk.” There’s a subtle message too. Even though the dog is so big that one paw more than covers the bug and Zeke could have killed the pest, he doesn’t; he lets it fly free. Being bigger and stronger isn’t an excuse to be a bully.
