Author Biography

Dr. Eichin Chang-Lim is a semi-retired optometrist.

In a recent interview, the author said, “You might have noticed that romance and inspirational are my niche genres. I write romance because I find it to be an intriguing genre. Relationships are quite involved in real life. Therefore, I use romance to depict the intricacies of relationships. Ultimately, it evolves into an inspirational and thought-provoking tale. Readers will discover that I tend to tell love stories beyond the confines of romance. I strive to convey the kind of love that is much broader and more profound than romantic or physical love. I strongly believe that love is more than a four-letter word. It’s multidimensional. It involves sacrifice, forgiveness, trust, demoting one’s ego, or even ‘letting it go’ at times. I also like to encompass the love of friendship, family, and even little pets in my stories.”

“As a romance writer, I write with my heart and soul. My mindset is that if my story can make a difference in even one person’s life, it’s all worth it, and that’s what love is all about,” she added.

Eichin modeled during college in Taiwan and was in several short films, including a supporting role in the comedy Indy/feature film Winning Formula. She has published five books.

Besides acting and writing, she loves opera and a big bear hug. Learn more about the author at www.eichinchanglim.com

When we’re young and feeling invincible, unless we have cause, we don’t give a lot of thought to our health, let alone our eyes. That all changes as we age and begin to notice we aren’t seeing as clearly as we once did, or we need stronger glasses, or one eye seems blurrier than the other. That’s what makes a book like Your Precious Sight by Dr. Eichin Chang-Lim a “must read”. Quite frankly, waiting until we have a reason to read it might just be too late. Dr. Chang-Lim’s book is not only a delight, thanks to the conversational style and a copious number of true-life anecdotes, but more importantly for the information it provides in easy-to-understand layman’s terms.

Learn not just about cataracts, glaucoma, epi-membrane issues (my own worrisome problem) but find out why some folks have color blindness, what those strange flashes we sometimes see in the dark mean, how diabetes affects the eyes, how retinas become detached, and even about the damage caused by smoking and drug use. If reading information like “...an estimated 2.4 million eye injuries occur in the United States each year. Notably, forty percent of eye injuries happen at home, and ten to twenty percent of injuries will cause temporary or permanent vision loss...”

If this doesn’t compel you to be more careful in your everyday environment and give you a good reason to wear protective glasses, perhaps Dr. Chang-Lim can. She has included a wonderful glossary of terms at the end of the book, along with plenty of active links in the digital version to take you to websites that expand on what she presents. Believe me, you are bound to learn much you didn’t know and you cannot come away from Your Precious Sight without being grateful that Dr. Eichin Chang-Lim took the time to write this for us all. Highly recommended.

The primary message contained in Your Precious Sight, Dr. Eichin Chang-Lim’s informative but accessible compilation of professional ophthalmic case studies, is self-evident in the title, and the doctor/author is repetitively cautionary, at one point summarizing her concern most concisely when she states: My personal motto and advice to my patients and loved ones – including you, my dear readers – is “when in doubt, check it out.” She is referring, of course, to any abnormalities one might experience regarding ongoing vision-related health, including less obvious but often significant indicative symptoms such as migraines, dizziness, and nausea. Obviously, Dr. Chang-Lim’s most forceful recommendation is that echoed by all medical professionals in every specialty: Do not neglect your routinely scheduled check-ups.

Dr. Eichin Chang-Lim is eager for you to keep Your Precious Sight. In creating her titled reminder of our most valued physical gift, Dr. Chang-Lim includes a wide array of personal anecdotes about her life treating and consulting patients about their experiences – both positive and some less so – with augmented medical devices (contact lenses) and reactionary episodes due to disease or drugs or injury. There are many ways our vision can be affected by personal choices, by deliberate or thoughtless actions, as well as by routinely repetitious daily activities. The rather short, typically jargon-free (medically speaking) stories told in this quickly-read book are – if not without some guilty gulping – readily recognizable in our own lives. The aim, however, is not to foster fear. Or self-diagnosis. The aim is to spread awareness and self-care. Even, you might say, to make the doctor’s job a little easier.

Your Precious Sight by Eichin Chang-Lim is a collection of real-life cases composed by the optometrist author. It’s a documentation of various situations handled and experienced by Dr. Chang-Lim, including her diagnoses and the possible causes of such outcomes. In every chapter, Dr. Chang-Lim highlights the different eye problems and questions she encountered in her profession. She provided stories ranging from easy, memorable cases to the worst ones she’s encountered so far. At the end of the chapter, she gives key points that summarize the most important parts that should be remembered.

Reading Dr. Eichin Chang-Lim’s book has given me an insight into the medical side of the patient-doctor dynamic. Her book has taught me a lot about basic eye care and has given me a fountain of information about one of the body’s most important organs, our eyes. She mentions the common problems encountered by people when it comes to their eyes, like pink eye and the usual cases where people need glasses to have their eyesight fixed, and various other complicated eye problems her patients have encountered. Dr. Chang-Lim graciously provided both the medical and common term of the problem and gave short, but easy to understand definitions which helped me understand and appreciate the cases on an even deeper level.

The best part of the book to me is how the author provided articles regarding the eye problems encountered in various chapters so that any interested reader can learn more about it. She also gave links to support groups for people who need help and encouragement as they go through certain life-altering eye problems. Your Precious Sight mostly emphasized how important it is to be careful with our eyes, to have them checked regularly and not to put it off, especially when something doesn’t feel right. The author’s unforgettable personal motto and advice to all is: “When in doubt, check it out.” Overall, this is an inspiring, knowledgable, self-help work that has changed my outlook for the better on the importance of eye care.

I have always thought that it is remarkable what optometrists can do to save people’s vision and bring them comfort, but Dr. Eichin Chang-Lim has brought an even deeper insight and a true passion for the subject into this short but invaluable little volume of tales. Though it may seem frightening to hear about all the things that can go wrong with a person’s vision, Dr. Chang-Lim has an easy way of narration and a confidence in the skills of professionals which allays a lot of fears for readers, and the organization of the different cases and the progression of the tales give a good variety without it all being doom and gloom.
