It is the year 2069. Secret archaeological digs have found remains of heroes, villains, monsters, and other mythical creatures. These remains have been used to make clones. These clones are then imprisoned and forced to fight in Xtreme Champion Tournament – a brutal entertainment sport. Xtreme Champion Tournament: Breakout is the third volume in the series of adventures of Spartacus and his fellow fighters. Shaun Keenan and Ben Rosenthal weave a compelling story of action and adventure coupled with betrayal and control. Breakout follows on from the previous volume where an explosion rocked the sports arena. The chaotic events that follow the explosion leave Spartacus and his comrades in a state of unrest and confusion. To flee or to fight? That is the blazing question facing the fighters.
In the beautifully illustrated comic book Xtreme Champion Tournament: Breakout, Shaun Keenan and Ben Rosenthal continue the story of Spartacus and his band. When an unexplained explosion shatters the sports arena, things go haywire. Everyone faces their own states of confusion – the scientists, the fighters (both heroes and villains), the audience members. Each character is caught in their own internal conflict and they must make quick decisions. The power-packed pages of conflict explore the dilemmas of the fighters. Betrayal, compassion, cunning, action, strength of character – all these are displayed within the compact narrative. I was enthralled by the stunning graphics. The attention to detail creates an exquisite result. This gripping page-turner has made me curious to know what happens next to Spartacus and his comrades.
