In Wrong Man Down by Jerry Masinton, Millie Henshawe is a professional assassin for a specialized contract killing agency, Continental Removals in Boston owned by Ralph Klammer. Her assignment seems simple; travel to Kansas airport and take out her target, gang boss Sheldon Kukich, as he places his luggage in his car. As she waits patiently with her gun hidden in a fake baby bump, Millie receives a call from Ralph. Kukich is now leaving the airport via a limousine. She cannot leave any witnesses so the driver has to be eliminated too. To Millie this is not personal, it is simply business. As events unfold, Millie and Ralph become targets themselves, the hunters are now being hunted. As the duo haplessly tries to foil detection by leaving clues for the police to find, they find themselves becoming more and more entrenched in trouble.
If you enjoy a story with wacky, unconventional characters, action, and side-splitting dry humor, then you are going to love this comical novel. The dialogue throughout is sharp and witty and the exchanges between Ralph and Millie are fantastic. I loved Millie as a character; she was no-nonsense, fearless, and ruthless, and was consistently underestimated by her male victims to their cost. The plot moves forward consistently and the obstacles both Ralph and Millie have to overcome make for a very compelling read. I loved how Jerry Masinton described some of the characters; he used analogies brilliantly. For example, a chin like Jay Leno and built like a fire hydrant. There are also amazing twists and turns to Wrong Man Down which were clever, original, and again extremely funny. I am definitely a fan of Millie Henshawe and cannot wait for the second book in the series, Who’s Who Among the Dead.
