Writing Prompts that Increase Your Creativity and Eliminate Writer's Block is a guidebook by Zhanna Hamilton. After a brief introduction, the book splits into several sections containing numbered prompts intended to inspire creative writing. These prompts could be used for personal practice at home, or in classroom settings to encourage free writing or for short personal projects. They range across all genres from factual, memory-based and autobiographical writing to science-fiction, paranormal and abstract themes. The prompts themselves are organised only by number, grouped into fifty at a time, but the variety of themes within them are scattered throughout the text.
As a writer myself, I find these kinds of books immensely useful, and Writing Prompts that Increase Your Creativity and Eliminate Writer's Block is only missing an organisational element that would make it a five star resource that I would use in both writing and teaching. All this book needs is for its prompts to be collected into categories by their similarities or themes, then it could become a very valuable resource for writers.
The prompts themselves are entertaining and very imaginative, and many of them made me feel like I wanted to start writing, even as I was perusing the book. Author Zhanna Hamilton definitely has a talent for tapping into interesting themes that make the cogs of a writer’s mind turn, and I could happily use this book for inspiration and writing practice whenever I felt the need. Overall, I found this to be a highly useful tool with the potential to be even better.
