Would You Do What They Did?: Great Christian Leaders from Our Past, written by William Dean Hamilton, is a collection of four creative nonfiction stories sharing the lives of four individuals who made significant contributions to the history of Christianity. The first individual highlighted in this book is Francis of Assisi. The second chapter focuses on Thomas Becket, while John Wesley is the subject of the third chapter. The last individual is Martin Luther. Each of these individuals are known throughout religious communities; however, details about their lives and the significance of their actions may not be that well-known. William decided to write accounts of their lives to help individuals become more familiar with them and understand how their choices influenced so many.
I was intrigued when I read the blurb for William Dean Hamilton’s book. I was familiar with the four individuals; however, I could not tell anyone much about their lives or what they are really known for. William has done an excellent job with bringing these four individuals to life by writing about their lives, their choices, and actions, and the significance of them. I found myself being drawn into the stories and into the individuals’ lives as the details shared painted such vivid images. William does an excellent job of sharing Christ through these individuals and what joy and love He gives to each of us and how we can live as lights for Him.
