Work in Progress: The Journal Antics of Abigail Nolan by J.K. Wood is a humorous short story about the rise and fall of a single girl in modern history. Abigail Nolan is on top of the world. She loves her job, she is engaged to the man of her dreams, and she has a realtor hunting for her perfect home. It is Abigail's twenty-ninth birthday and when she gets to work, she gets the surprise of her life. Instead of having birthday cake, she gets the boot. When she goes to her fiancé for comfort, he dumps her. Without any income, Abigail loses her apartment and her new home is a dream lost in the mists of time. On top of it all, her best friend is not taking her calls and is no longer in contact with her. So it comes down to the inevitable - alone with no income and no other option but living on the streets, Abigail moves back with her parents. As she struggles with the horrors of accompanying her parents to their colonoscopies, visits from her 'princess' sister, and nightmare dates from hell, Abigail remembers why she left home. Will she ever find a job and have a life of her own again, or will she be forever awakened every morning at the crack of dawn by the vacuum cleaner?
Work in Progress: The Journal Antics of Abigail Nolan by J.K. Wood is an amusing and downright funny story that kept me in stitches. Abigail's outlook on her own life is hilarious and pragmatic. Her journal is a satirical viewpoint about her shortcomings and is so genuine that the reader can easily relate to Abigail. Not only is it comical, it is also rather poignant. I was in tears throughout the whole story, either from laughing so hard or from sympathizing with Abigail's trials. This is a thoroughly enjoyable and humorous tale and I highly recommend reading it. If you feel down and out, this will help you realize that life ain't so bad, after all! Great story! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
