Wings in the Meadow: Marlie and Grayson's Explorations - Volume 1 by Idris K. Stokes opens with Grayson and her best friend Marlie going to the meadow for a butterfly hunt with Grayson’s mom. It is a beautiful spring day and the sun is shining bright. Though the girls know about butterfly hunting, they do not know what a meadow is. Grayson’s mother explains what a meadow is. The girls cannot wait to see the meadow after hearing the description given by Grayson’s mom. They get the checklist ready and they jump into the car and reach the meadow in no time. Grayson’s mother gives them half an hour to finish the hunt and tells them a few things about butterflies before entering the meadow for the hunt. Will the girls be able to catch butterflies? Let us read the book to find out.
I like the way in which the author gives many layers to the story. She not only gives information about what a meadow is, but also introduces children to what needs to be carried while going on a butterfly hunt, and also tips on how to catch a butterfly. The story also speaks about the extinction of the Monarch butterfly, its symbolism, and why it is important to set them free. The author weaves a lot of educational and useful information into the story with expertise. The illustrations are vibrant and colorful and they bring the story and the characters to life, making the story captivating. I recommend this book to all parents to have in their personal collection and it can be used for interactive sessions in classrooms and school libraries during their read aloud and storytelling sessions. The tips at the end of the story on how to help save the Monarch butterfly will also encourage children to try their hand at gardening.
