White Fanged Blue Bitch is a seafaring adventure tale by Captain Art Ayotte in the historical fiction genre. The plot centers on a young man named Leo Arnold, just turned sixteen, who is tempted by the seemingly inviting and adventurous life of being at sea. Enlisting on the Abner E. Bowdoin, a merchant ship, Leo learns that life at sea is far more dangerous than he could ever have imagined, but also far more exciting than his wildest dreams. He experiences his first love on a distant and exotic shore, encounters death, murder and chaos at every turn, but perhaps most importantly, Leo faces the terrifying power of the sea itself, realising that it is she who has become his true mistress.
It’s clear in every page of this elegantly written text that Captain Art Ayotte has lived his life aboard ships. The meticulous attention to detail colours Leo’s world with fascinating and vivid description, which combines with an astute sense of storytelling to produce an incredibly immersive and enjoyable novel. White Fanged Blue Bitch, named for the curse that the sailors put upon the sea herself, never holds back in its harrowing description of the difficulties and hazards that seafaring men faced on a daily basis. Though I’d say it’s a tad on the macho side, Leo’s journey from boy to man is one that any reader can follow with enthusiasm. Overall, I’d highly recommend this novel for fans of accurate historical fiction and high adventure with dark, brutal moments of truth.
