Where the Darkness Lies: Perils of Portia Saga #2 by Hermione Lee sees Amethyst and Prince Angus face the responsibility of ruling the fairy kingdom of Portia. When Amethyst’s lady-in-waiting, Fontaine Miles, observes an ominous portent in the skies, Amethyst longs to ignore the sign. Returning to her room after a magical masquerade ball, Amethyst is struck and rendered unconscious. She awakens to find herself imprisoned in a tower. Escaping the goblins who are holding her, Amethyst embarks on a perilous journey to find her way home. Along the way, she must avoid being a living meal for vampires and thwart a planned invasion. She believes Prince Angus is searching for her, but will he find her in time?
Where the Darkness Lies by Hermione Lee continues the enchanting coming-of-age adventure in the Perils of Portia saga. It is a character-driven story that combines the romanticism of young love, and the excitement of escaping personal danger. I liked the way Amethyst attempted to spread her happiness by match-making for Fontaine. I enjoyed her resourceful attempts to save herself, and the melodramatic way she was always thwarted. Suspense compounded as Amethyst stumbled from one difficult situation into another. I hoped she was getting closer to her target of home and safety, but feared she was entering more dangerous territory. At one point, her journey appeared to have become circular and the obstacles looked insurmountable. I was frightened when Amethyst’s predicament escalated into a national crisis and breathed a happy sigh of relief as reinforcements arrived. Where the Darkness Lies by Hermione Lee contains all the classic fairy tale elements, but delivers a darker storyline with a few contemporary twists.
