Where do dinosaurs go on vacation? They have yet to decide. When the story opens, a group of six dinosaurs is looking at drawings on the rock wall and the question is where do they dream of going. This is followed by all sorts of ideas, all beautifully illustrated by Nejla Shojaie. Lots of them include toys, and some animals other than dinosaurs. Eventually, the dialogue moves on to the transport they might use. A car, a train, or a bus? Cartoon-style humans appear at the very end, all peering through binoculars in the hope that they may get their wish – to see a dinosaur! Where Do Dinosaurs Go on Vacation? by Kim Ann is an entertaining book likely to enchant children and the perfect length for a bedtime story.
Where Do Dinosaurs Go on Vacation? by Kim Ann had me fascinated. Written as dialogue, the story favors rhyming couplets that children love. There is plenty in Nejla Shojaie’s drawings to keep the attention of youngsters while they are listening – the language is simple, but not geared toward learner readers. The thing that impressed me most when I experimented with reading aloud was that no names are used that a child has to remember. It is just Mom, Grandma, or a carer telling them an intriguing story. The book is on my gift list for toddlers and pre-schoolers in my life! This is a captivatingly different bedtime book sure to earn its place on any child’s bookshelf.
