I have always lived in north London, UK. Opposite my house were only fields and the local school was a mere 5-minute walk. The spinney nearby provided opportunities for jumping a stream, picking blackberries, and hiding in the woods. Switch to three children later, husband David, seven grandchildren nearby - 3 girls and 4 boys - and living closer to central London in Swiss Cottage. I used to write song lyrics and now love writing children’s stories, especially in rhyming verse. I am a keen ceroc dancer, including ceroc holidays abroad, and more recently I regularly play a game of boggle and do codewords. I never drink coffee - thank goodness for tea!

When Moggie met Froggie by Julia Stebbing is the story of an unlikely friendship between a cat and a frog. Moggie is a rather scruffy-looking ginger cat, out looking for a meal when he happens to see Froggie sitting on a log. Froggie comments on Moggie’s rather messy appearance and Moggie tries to knock him off the log. Froggie, however, is much too quick and after a back-and-forth conversation, Froggie agrees to help Moggie freshen up. Moggie takes a bath in a puddle, is feeling much better, and thanks Froggie for his help. A blushing Froggie asks if Moggie would like to be his friend and a new friendship is born. There are a few British terms in the book that when known make the story richer, i.e., Moggie is a cat, especially an unpedigreed one, and a pong is an unpleasant smell.
When Moggie Met Froggie is a delightful, heartwarming rhyming story. Julia Stebbing’s rhymes flow effortlessly, making this a fabulous read-aloud. Kids will enjoy seeing the budding friendship that develops between the scruffy Moggie and the tidy Froggie, despite its rocky beginning. They might also take away a little lesson, that sometimes we judge a situation before we know all the facts. Stephen Stone’s soft pastel illustrations are outstanding, from Moggie’s big green eyes and striped ginger fur to Froggie’s dapper bow tie. When Moggie Met Froggie shows that friendships can be formed in unlikely places. Let us hope that this friendship leads to more Moggie and Froggie adventures.
