In 2015, we got the unbelievable opportunity to travel to South Africa.
Being out in the wilderness, the Bush, the Veld, the Savannah, it all felt like coming home to me. I felt such a connection to that land and its inhabitants, particularly the animals. I know I came back a different woman, Africa cracked open a desire to live a more primal life. And by that, I mean live authentically without the walls and facades. I want people to see me, to know me, the soul of me.
My experience in Africa was just begging to come forth in some fashion. I was captivated by how the lodges were run and the guides all working together and the gloriousness of the animals. Getting to see these beautiful beasts in their natural environment is so moving, I cannot seem to put words to it.
My intent with the novel When Lions Roar, was to give readers a tease, of what it was like to be in Africa and spark a desire to make that trip. There's a harsh unforgiving edge to South Africa, but the contrast, majestic wonder and beauty all come together and are present in the most magical of ways. How could I not write about that?
Like our heroine, Africa permeated my soul and healed me in ways I didn't realize I needed to be healed. Stay open to the experiences and opportunities that come your way and lean into the offerings life has for you.

When Lions Roar by Karen Gruber is the story of Maggie, who is married to David, a narcissist. Controlling and self-centered, David constantly belittles Maggie who eventually crumbles under his verbal abuse and starts drinking. One day he unexpectedly informs her they are moving to South Africa since he has accepted an assignment as a photojournalist. Maggie knows that objecting will serve no purpose and starts packing. The family’s travels take them to the plains of Africa where Maggie and Hannah fall in love with their surroundings. Disaster strikes one day when Hannah disappears, and David puts all the blame on Maggie. His verbal abuse escalates till one day he brutally attacks and rapes her. Finally, Maggie musters the courage to free herself from David’s harsh control, telling him they are finished. She stops drinking and stays on in the camp, continuing the search for Hannah.
When Lions Roar by Karen Gruber is creative and inventive, with imaginative writing that magically transported me to a world where animals rule and speak. I found it thought-provoking to read about Maggie's and Hannah’s hardships and sadly realized the probability of real-life abuse taking place behind closed doors. When a completely different story emerged I was baffled, but not for long as Karen effortlessly lured me into another world, skillfully revealing the intended metaphor. Karen does not leave one guessing, subtly providing insight into what The Golden Creature represents. This is an unusual, descriptive, and enjoyable book, one I thoroughly enjoyed. A true delight to read.
