"When Empires Fall" by Katie Jennings is the saga of the Vasser family. There is a little of everything: suspense, romance, revenge, strong characters and a good plot. Grant the workaholic older brother, Linc the hard working playboy, and Madison the tough as nails sister form the newest generation to be running the exclusive and very expensive New York branch of the Vasser hotel. Life changes for the worst when they are suddenly forced to deal with the long ago suicide of their great grandfather when their irresponsible deadbeat father announces to the press while in a drunken stupor that he witnessed his father Cyrus shoot his grandfather when he was a seven year old boy. They also are interviewed by a police detective who has information that has just turned up from an old lover that corroborates the murder story and more. The three young people must now deal with the repercussions of what this will do to the hotel and their reputations. While they are facing all of these problems, both Grant and Linc are lucky to find romance with loving, caring women and are able to find comfort. Madison becomes forced to deal with an old lover who is not so comforting. Grandfather Cyrus is in a hospital hooked up to life-saving equipment and quietly grooming Madison to be the best of all the Vassers. When she goes to the hospital and confronts him with the information, he is forced to admit that he did indeed kill his father in an attempt to keep him from assigning the inheritance of the hotels to the woman he loved rather than to his son. We soon learn that Cyrus is even meaner and deadly than the grandchildren could ever imagine.
"When Empires Fall" had me hooked from the first page. Katie Jennings does a great job of capturing my imagination and keeping my attention from beginning to end. I felt as though I was a friend of the Vasser family and wanted to visit the hotel. I was so disappointed to get to the last page and not know what happens next. I am looking forward to the next book in this series. Katie Jennings has a five star book that could easily become an award winning movie. Don’t pass this one up – it is a true winner.
