What Wonders Await Outdoors is a work of highly enjoyable nature fiction, written in picture book format for children by author Justine Avery, complete with illustrations by Liuba Syrotiuk. Following up on the Wonders series after What Wonders Do You See When You Dream, we now move into the beauty and majesty of the natural world for the next gorgeous installment. Here, Avery invites her readers to put down all those gadgets and indoor activities and take a few steps outside to see, hear and feel all that nature has to offer in a diverse mixture of fantasy and real-world themes and delightful rhyming narrative.
Despite the book being for children, there are plenty of adults who could do with this lavish and poetic reminder to step outside and enjoy nature once in a while too. The watercolour illustrations by artist Liuba Syrotiuk give an ethereal quality to the landscape which brings in the colour and atmosphere of the different seasons, but also makes nature seem even more magical and mysterious to discover. Author Justine Avery times her rhymes very well, landing on poignant points about the indoor nature of modern life without feeling pushy or preachy. The gentle and exciting invitation to be outside is well spun, and her descriptions match the illustrations perfectly to keep that magical realism feel going throughout the delightful plot. Overall, What Wonders Await Outdoors is an essential book for getting the young ones (and some of the older ones) motivated to be at one with nature again. An excellent read.
