What Wonders Await Outdoors is a work of highly enjoyable nature fiction, written in picture book format for children by author Justine Avery, complete with illustrations by Liuba Syrotiuk. Following up on the Wonders series after What Wonders Do You See When You Dream, we now move into the beauty and majesty of the natural world for the next gorgeous installment. Here, Avery invites her readers to put down all those gadgets and indoor activities and take a few steps outside to see, hear and feel all that nature has to offer in a diverse mixture of fantasy and real-world themes and delightful rhyming narrative.

Despite the book being for children, there are plenty of adults who could do with this lavish and poetic reminder to step outside and enjoy nature once in a while too. The watercolour illustrations by artist Liuba Syrotiuk give an ethereal quality to the landscape which brings in the colour and atmosphere of the different seasons, but also makes nature seem even more magical and mysterious to discover. Author Justine Avery times her rhymes very well, landing on poignant points about the indoor nature of modern life without feeling pushy or preachy. The gentle and exciting invitation to be outside is well spun, and her descriptions match the illustrations perfectly to keep that magical realism feel going throughout the delightful plot. Overall, What Wonders Await Outdoors is an essential book for getting the young ones (and some of the older ones) motivated to be at one with nature again. An excellent read.

What Wonders Await Outdoors by Justine Avery and Liuba Syrotiuk is a beautiful book that will help readers connect with nature and revere and respect her. The book begins with children deciding to go out and play after having played indoors all day. They realized they have been very busy and forgotten to step outside. They knew they had a whole new world to explore outside. They knew they were invited and they had to listen to Nature's calling. They knew that whether it was rain, fog, sun, or snow, or wherever they would go, it would be fun. They knew all sorts of things were happening and they wanted to be a part of it. Let us go outdoors with these youngsters and take time to notice everything around us and respect it.

This wonderful book is the best way to invite children to observe everything outdoors and appreciate it. The watercolor illustrations are lively and vibrant and they capture the beauty of the outdoors and make it palpable to readers. It is a good book that can be used for interactive sessions in classrooms to find out what wonders children notice when they are outdoors. Connecting with nature is important and respecting nature is equally important. This book is all about that and will encourage readers to step outside their homes and appreciate their surroundings. The author gives good motivation to readers, both children and adults, to step outside, wander about, and soak up the beauty of outdoors. So what are you waiting for? Let us step outside and reconnect with nature and the natural world.

Children in today’s day and age often do not even know the adventures, joy, excitement, and complete bewilderment that they can experience with a simple trip into their own back yard, or neighborhood park. Most play games with toys, enjoy electronics and do not know about the world outside their own inside comforts. The use of a child’s innocence through imagination is slowly dwindling when they have every device known to man literally at their figure tips nowadays. Reconnect with nature and rebuild the most wonderful thing a child can offer the world; an amazing imagination.

What Wonders Await Outdoors by Justine Avery is an intriguing child’s picture book containing vibrant illustrations. The book offers young readers the chance to ponder on all the great things they would be missing outdoors if they were to stay inside all day. Justine Avery offers readers a glimpse of what adventures might await them if they just simply step outside and enjoy the wind, grass, sunshine, sounds, smells and more. The author offers the chance for young readers, parents, librarians, schools, etc., to ponder on the concepts of nature and imagination. For example, are you getting enough outside time for free play? Playing, working, and relaxing outside can build character and spikes imaginative thought. Children need this most of all at a young age to develop, and adults need this to recoup from the stresses of their lives. Read this book and step outside, or read this book outside, and enjoy all the potential adventures that come with doing so!
