The world is under siege by a pandemic virus called the Corona Virus, or Covid-19. Everyone’s scared and trying to do their part to stop the spread of this deadly virus. For young children, this unknown enigma, this virus, can be extremely upsetting. What better way to explain it to young readers than to teach them about viruses in general: from the basic scientific understanding of what a living cell is, how it was first discovered, to the invasion of viruses and what they can do to the living cell. All very interesting and useful material for people of all ages, but particularly for young children.
Rich Linville’s picture book story, What is a Virus for Kids, is very timely, given the growing concern in our communities. He presents the topic logically and scientifically, simplifying the language as best he can and using illustrations (drawn and photographs) to explain different concepts. The conclusion stresses the importance of washing your hands well and regularly. And, he summarizes the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Do the Five instructions to stop the virus: wash hands, cough into your elbow, don’t touch your face, stay more than 3 feet or 1 meter away from others, and, if you feel sick, stay home. This is an impressive presentation of something that is very current. What is a Virus for Kid by Rich Linville should be shared with young and old alike because its simplicity in presentation and useful illustrations will help all of us, particularly the non-scientific people in this world, to understand the severity of what we face when a virus like Covid-19 strikes.
