So many of us dream, though I’m sure there are some who don’t. Have you ever wondered what a dream was? Pepper did. He’s Little Ari’s cherished dog. And he talks, which shocks Little Ari. When she recovers from the shock, she listens to her dog’s questions about dreams and tries to answer them as best she can. She begins her explanation by telling Pepper: “A dream is a place where you go in your mind, but it lives inside of your heart.” Beautifully said! Pepper continues with more questions, wanting to know how a dream looks, feels, smells, sounds, and tastes, in other words, how dreams affect the five senses. Little Ari has an imaginative, creative answer for each question.
Shanita Allen’s picture book story, What is a Dream? (Let’s Go Dreaming, Book 2), is a charming bedtime story that will appeal to young readers. Told mostly in rhyming verse and beautifully illustrated, this book is a treasure. Young readers will enhance their reading skills and their understanding of the five senses as they explore the limits of their own imaginations. I’m sure this story will spark more questions from young readers. The special bond between Little Ari and her dog, Pepper, really makes the story, as the two share ideas and then, at the end, curl up on the bed to share a dream. The story is fun, playful, and will soothe young readers as they settle down for a night of their own dreams. A great way to encourage creative dreams.
