What I Tell Myself About Talent is an educational picture book for children, grades k-3, written by Michael Brown and illustrated by Lovyaa Garg. All kids have interests, things that make them sit up and take notice, and many have noticeable skills and interests. All kids are talented in some way or another, but many of them never realize that their talents can evolve and grow into lifetime pursuits. Each kid is different. Some gravitate to the arts: painting, drawing, sculpting, photography; others light up at the thought of being on the stage or singing with a band. Still others aspire to be like their teachers, their doctor, or the fireman in his big red truck. The sky is truly the limit for children as they explore their world and the things that move them.
Michael Brown’s What I Tell Myself About Talent offers kids the opportunity to think about their own talents and skills, and to consider what they want to do in life, and it does so in an upbeat and illuminating way. Often, kids feel adrift and may not have given thought to the things that make their world rock. As they read this positive and self-affirming book, they can think about the different options shown and consider which ones appeal to them. Sometimes, it’s easy when a child is naturally gifted at one particular thing, such as playing the piano, but most of us have a multitude of interests, skills, and yes, talents. Exploring the options becomes exciting; this book shows just how to do that. Lovyaa Garg’s bright, zany, and colorful illustrations work quite well with the storyline and make all those talented characters feel real. What I Tell Myself About Talent is most highly recommended.
