Cassondra Windwalker’s What Hides In The Cupboards follows a couple ready for a fresh start following an unpleasant tragedy. Moving to an isolated lovely house in the desert of New Mexico is meant to help Hesper Dunn deal with the ghosts she carries, the injuries that damaged her hand, and improve her pottery skills. Her heart is torn between terror and curiosity after seeing paintings of a mysterious little boy behind cupboard doors all over their new home. The revelation of how the last owner of the property died is scary and contrary to Hesper’s hopes for a new beginning. There are ghosts in the house haunting her sanity and destroying her craft. Do these ghosts have a connection to the paintings, and how can she set them free?
Cassondra Windwalker’s What Hides In The Cupboards moved me to tears. Unlike other horror novels with fast-paced and violent actions, this modern gothic horror tale is written at a leisurely pace, with every action, mystery, and detail laid out for readers to absorb. Hesper Dunn is an excellent representation of the tortured artist; her mental health was unstable, and she was still caught in her past. She was ready to learn the mystery of the medieval symbolism handed to her by her sister-in-law, the truth behind the weird artworks in her new house, and the mysteries hidden in her home, but she was not prepared to acknowledge the present. What Hides In The Cupboards is suggested for readers who appreciate slow-paced horror with underlying misery. It deserves its five-star rating!
