I have been promising to write the book that they say is in all of us. just after Covid arrived, I started with a blank screen, having thought about Captain Tom for the previous few days. My Dad was also a Captain in the RASC and I wanted to mention him in a memory, albeit mostly fictional, so an image was left long after he is forgotten. Once I started, it took over, a life of its own developed and the storyline flowed easily. Many characters and elements are true, as inevitably happens when you travel through life. If you have ever thought of writing a book, just do it, you may think you have only one book in you, you may well be surprised. The hardest part is getting your book read by people but to have it in print makes the journey worthwhile.

From a small village in northern Italy, the family moves to the UK and the U.S. When WWII is declared, Tommy Beales, the main character in the novel, joins the army to follow his dream of traveling to other parts of the world. He rises through the ranks and becomes acting Major in transport for The Royal Army Service Corps. In 1945, towards the end of the war, Tommy and Roman, a Russian Cavalry Colonel, stumble upon information that changes their lives. Together with Tommy’s cousins, they devise an intricate plan that enriches them and their families for generations to come.
What Does It Profit A Man? by Jon Bulgari is a thrilling account that contains fascinating historical details surrounding WWII. It follows the interesting experiences of different family members, exploring the risks and threats they encounter. Though they are surrounded by opulence, their lives are imperfect. The story contains surprising revelations about the family including a fierce feud. It also follows Roman’s interesting life and his long-term friendship with Tommy. Through his life, the novel includes informative snippets of Russia’s recent history. Action scenes also appear. They are exciting and many times unpredictable. The novel is comprised of many sub-plots involving different aspects of Tommy and his family’s lives, which makes it compelling. What Does It Profit A Man? by Jon Bulgari is an intriguing novel with interesting historical elements and a captivating storyline.
