What Does Daffy Dugong Do Wrong? An Environmental Primer for Kids, Their Parents, Grandparents, and Teachers by Jeff Peck caught my attention from the title and held it throughout the reading experience. What’s a dugong, anyway? A dugong is a marine mammal with looks similar to that of a manatee, which readers will discover amongst other interesting facts in the book. Daffy the dugong, however, is not the best of animals. Enjoying the privilege of a rich life, Daffy has a penchant for ignoring the environment and his fellow animals. He leaves wrappers on the ground, doesn’t share his toys, and wastes utilities at times. Yet, Daffy doesn’t see what is wrong with that. Can you help him? How can he be a better dugong and friend?
What Does Daffy Dugong Do Wrong? was certainly educational from the very beginning. It teaches young readers about different animals as well as the environment. I can’t say I’ve heard of a dugong before, which prompted me to learn more about the animal and pick up the book. Author Jeff Peck discusses dugongs at the end of the book so you’ll probably have to help your little one out at first, but it's worth the learning journey. While animals are fun and sure to catch kids’ attention, caring for the environment is at the heart of this book, making it a perfect resource for teachers and parents who want to help children learn about the world they live in and how to protect it. The book is filled with bright colors and interactive features perfect for young readers to enjoy.
