"What Daddy Did Today: A Father's Bedtime Story" by Walter Wally, and illustrated very nicely by Judith Bicking, is a vividly colorful, very imaginative tale of derring-do for a father to read to his children at bedtime. It details such heroics as saving a lion cub from a hungry dragon and floating a hot air balloon up to the stars, to winning a baseball game with a home run. "What Daddy Did Today" is sure to have the little ones in giggle-fits. This book is not meant to teach anything, and it does not lead to a life lesson. It is intended solely for entertainment, and is well-suited for that purpose.
The author has a remarkably active imagination. The things "Daddy Did Today" put the average Superhero to shame! Children in the age range for which this book is intended (pre-school) generally consider their fathers to be heroes anyway. This book entertains them by stretching their perceptions far beyond anything they might have imagined their father doing. This is a book every father should have so that he can read it to his children at bedtime, especially if and when they inquire why Daddy has to go away every day. While it is unlikely even the youngest child would fail to recognize the exaggerations featured in this book, they are such great exaggerations that the kids will realize their father didn't really do any of those things, while simultaneously appreciating the humor of the story. If all else fails, the artistic renditions provided by Judith Bicking will surely entertain and maintain the child's interest.
