What Are You Willing to Risk? is a work of tense and conceptual science fiction for young adults, penned by author P. L. Camery. Set in a future where the all-powerful Guardian has achieved complete surveillance over the population, the story follows young Lawrence and his friends and family as they grow up in a world where their societal place has already been decided. As an upper cast student, Lawrence seems to have it all, but under the surface, he dreams of a city below where freedom and choice still reign above all else. As society begins to show the chinks in its armor all around him, Lawrence feels the pull to rise and be different, but what will he risk to make it happen?
Author P. L. Camery pulls together classic elements of science fiction to create a constrained and claustrophobic world. Though the teenage group of protagonists seems, at first, to have the same freedoms to hang out and entertain themselves as our own modern-day teens, the hidden chains of the Guardian and the Imperial Police soon appear, giving an ever-building sense of tension to the unfolding plot. The pacing of events is speedy and exciting, bonding the characters through sudden moments of peril and tearing away their concept of the world around them. Lawrence is a strong hero to lead the pack, inspired by old ideals and modeling a new bohemia that will appeal to readers. Overall, What Are You Willing to Risk? is a highly entertaining conceptual read.
