Bella is an adorable girl who goes to the park in her favorite princess dress. To her surprise, she meets Jules, another lovely girl dressed the same. Bella tries to make friends but finds it's a bit more complicated than she expected. Jules is friendly in her own way but has autism. This is something new for Bella and she's not quite sure how to act. Jules' mom explains to Bella what autism is and how to approach her new friend. We Are Different, We Are the Same: A Story About Autism shows that despite autism, friendship is possible and can develop naturally. Although people are different, there will always be aspects that unite us all. Anita Stafford explains the subject in a very empathetic way, describing how it is possible to interact with an autistic child.
Children with autism can have a very difficult time when they are not included, but if their peers and friends are informed about it, there can be a better relationship and sufficient communication. Although autistic people act a little differently, they are also friendly and need our understanding and respect. The issue of awareness is a growing need because there are more and more autistic children. I enjoyed how Anita Stafford discussed some of the most important things to keep in mind while teaching tolerance and friendship. We Are Different, We Are the Same will enable children to empathize with others. When children understand autism, they will be able to live together in a new way.
