Warrior Lover: Battling the Combat PTSD Relationship (The "Warrior" Series Book 1) by Leilani Anastasia is a self-help guide for women and men who are in relationships with military veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, usually referred to as PTSD. In her book, Anastasia examines the unique position of those who date and/or marry service members who carry within them these invisible scars, how to identify them, how to help and find help for them, how to cope, and either how to thrive in the relationship or, if necessary, how to find the strength to move on. Anastasia lets readers know that she speaks from experience and her own research as opposed to a formal education in this area, and as such her words are both raw and natural, written like a friend who is having a frank and honest conversation with you.
As the sister of two Marines, someone who has seen both brothers deployed for extended tours overseas, I selected this book to review in an effort to understand why one of these men seems to struggle in relationships, and the other (by all outward accounts) is able to flourish. I found Warrior Lover: Battling the Combat PTSD Relationship (The "Warrior" Series Book 1) by Leilani Anastasia to be wonderfully insightful, particularly when it touched on issues of codependency. I also found some parts to be heartbreaking. Anastasia writes with an intelligent and colorful sense of humor that she's able to deftly balance with a meaningful, serious narrative. I have no doubt that the men and women who choose to blaze a trail with those who have, quite literally, been on blazing trails themselves, will find her empathy and instruction to be crucial to their personal journeys.
