Ha-Le escapes the threat of communism and death when she leaves her country, Vietnam, on a crowded boat for Australia. While she is aware that it isn't going to be easy, she is determined to succeed. But her child, born of an interracial couple, is educated and ready to face life, so Ha-Le has to change her beliefs to accommodate her when her daughter prepares to introduce her boyfriend.
The worst form of pain that Ha-Le experiences is her heartbreak. Now she must choose how to face a new form of threat, of rejection and silent death.
