Imagine if you could change the past by simply typing a different message on a computer, creating a completely different timeline, where the people you cared for never died, but that slight change in the timeline affected the world in such a bad way to cause millions of deaths in another country, and an endless new war involving yours. A second Vietnam War without an exit route. What would you do if you had the chance to revert everything back, knowing that your dear ones will be lost, but that millions of lives will be saved and there won’t be a second Vietnam War? That is the answer Mendy Sobol gives us in Virtual Fire through well-rounded characters and heartfelt decisions. The weapon of choice, in this case, is software with which Paul, ‘Tesla’, grasps the destiny of humanity in his hands.
I read this book in less than four days and only because I usually have a busy schedule. Otherwise, I would have devoured it in a few hours. Not being familiar with the struggle the Vietnam War caused within the US, I was intrigued by the story and the emotions involved on more fronts about that subject. I can’t vouch on the historical accuracy of the political events, but I’m sure that despite the peace movement wanting to promote peace, plenty of violence was involved on both sides, as we see in the fictional characters involved in the main plot. If you like emotions, struggles, intrigue, love, dedication, and timeline messing, then this book is for you. Grab it and enjoy.
