Violating the Calm is an action-packed drama novel written by R. W. Saunders. Kyle Chalmers, a fifteen-year-old, creates a BMX biking track on his neighborhood's hillside, naively naming it Kyle's Killer Kourse (KKK). The name understandably catches the attention of a black citizen named Lorenzo Killian, and he confronts Kyle about the sign. This leads to an accidental altercation with Kyle's mother, Carol, who unfortunately ends up in the hospital. Kyle's father, Martin, instantly grasps the gravity of the situation and decides not to press charges against Lorenzo. However, conservative Judge Mary Moore insists upon bringing federal charges on Lorenzo Killian, citing a ridiculous sum of one million dollars for bail. As the case receives widespread media coverage, the peaceful neighborhood turns into a warzone, involving a White Supremacist biker gang and other nefarious elements.

Author R. W. Saunders tells a tale that feels strongly relevant for our time, where things get blown out of proportion and can cause much more damage than the initial act itself. Violating the Calm is raw, realistic, and captures the essence of how modern society works in a nutshell. The characters are well-realized, and they seamlessly encapsulate the underlying themes of the narrative. The author uses multiple POV characters, from which Kyle, Martin, Lorenzo, and Agent Sheila Parks were my personal favorites. The plot moves at a blistering pace and in unexpected ways, keeping you glued to the pages. If you're itching for a fast-paced, action-oriented novel that tackles some heavy topics, I highly recommend Violating the Calm.
