Vigilatus by Brenda Heller and Jimmy Adams is a dark tale of time travel and Hitler’s Germany. Theo and Gracie make plans to escape Germany, taking their robotic dog with them. A secret society called the Watch helps them, smuggling them into a castle where bad news awaits - their guardian and friend has been kidnapped. Theo tries to bring 21st technology to Germany in the ’30s and Gracie finds herself in a literal house of horrors. Finally making it back to the US, one of the worst disasters of all time faces Theo as he relives the terrible nightmare of Germany under Hitler and tries to rewrite history, only to come to the solid realization that his world, a world of the future, could be irrevocably changed. For better or worse, Theo has to make the right decision.
Vigilatus by Brenda Heller and Jimmy Adams is part of a series. It is an extremely well-written story, a combination of historical fact and science fiction coming together in a hugely exciting novel. It’s clear that a great deal of research has been done to keep the history side of it accurate and it brings the story alive in a very real and sometimes terrifying way. It’s an action-packed story, with no dead ends, just well-paced thrilling action with excellent characters – the robotic dog put me in mind of K9 from Dr. Who! It’s not easy to combine history and science fiction in a way that makes perfect sense but it has been pulled off perfectly here. Amazing story, and highly recommended for fans of science fiction and for those who fancy something just that little bit different.
