VIETNAM Before - During - After: A Young Man's Journey by David C. Friend is an intimate look at the life of a Vietnam War veteran. When David was a young man growing up in the '60s in the United States, he lived the life of a normal American teenager; going to school, buying his first car, working at odd jobs and falling in love. Little did he know that he would soon find himself thousands of miles away in Vietnam, fighting a war that would become one of the most controversial in US history. This memoir gives readers an honest and revealing insight into the mind of a 19-year-old soldier, a pawn of self-serving politicians. He is one of the lucky ones because he came out of it alive.
David C. Friend's memoir VIETNAM Before - During - After: A Young Man's Journey is both informative and enlightening. The 1960s was a turbulent time for America with the assassination of the Kennedy brothers and Martin Luther King and escalation of US participation in the Vietnam War. But the one that most impacted Americans was arguably the Vietnam War, with almost two million of its young men and women directly involved in the conflict. David Friend's arduous journey is just one of many and this is his memoir. This book attempts to study the emotional, spiritual and physical impact of the Vietnam War so that readers can perhaps understand what these veterans have gone through, and it is a compelling read. And as David finds himself drawn to God, there is no doubt that his experience in Vietnam has strengthened his faith.
