I have read a lot of novels about vampires. Sometimes they are the protagonist. Sometimes they are the antagonist. But whatever side of good and evil they happen to fall upon in a particular novel, they are always interesting. That seems to be an unspoken but very firm part of their nature. Vampires are complex. They are very deep. And they make great friends or formidable enemies. My guess is that Rufino, the protagonist of Vath’s Legacy, would make both an awesome friend and an enemy that kept you up at night. Rufino is easily the most unusual vampire I have read about. And I have read about a lot of them. Right from the beginning he captured my attention. I mean really, how many short vampires have you heard of? How many of them love cookies and like kids?
The strength of Vath’s Legacy lies in the talent of the author. Joshua Rem takes a first-person narrative and works magic with it. We come to know and like Rufino, as well as his crazy, magical world. This world is unique in the kinds of magical creatures who inhabit it as well as the varieties of magic available. I never knew who or what I would be introduced to next and I found that this kept me glued to the story. When you add all this to an interesting supporting cast of characters like a half human/half elf druid priestess, then you have one of the best magical novels of the year. I enjoyed Vath’s Legacy thoroughly.
