Beth Morrissey takes great pride in her boys but that wasn’t always true. She has come a long way in the last fifteen years. In 1978 Mary Beth married Richard. It was in the late 1980s that she discovered a different side to her husband. For years he’d been involved with Claudia Bingham. After thirteen years of marriage Richard left Mary Beth a hand written letter telling her he’d filed for divorce and had taken the kids. He’d shut off the phone, stripped the beds, and emptied the desks and closets. Mary Beth wasn’t ready to give up on her children. Richard’s hired thugs knocked her on the head and threw her into her trunk, and then they drove off. When she came to she was in a swamp. With the help of Vida and Niko Mary Beth turned her life around. It was 1992 and she’d been sober for two months.

J.B. DiNizo allows readers a glimpse into the life of an abused woman. In sharing this story with readers she is sharing the story of thousands of women who are controlled, manipulated and maltreated by their spouses. In this tale, Richard is a political figure. Along with politics comes power and along with power comes misuse of power. I found this story simple and yet refreshing. Mary Beth worked hard to become a new person. She had turned to alcohol and that is a difficult addiction to break. After years of taking her children for granted she learned to cherish them. Richard ended as a shell of a man; his children no longer acknowledged him. DiNizo is careful to keep her tale, heading in the direction of salvation. DiNizo works with battered women when she isn’t writing. Her style is inspirational. I will be watching for more books by this author.
