Unsung Victims: Resiliency (Volume 1) by Ica Iova is Joanna Becali’s story. Jo is from a close-knit, loving Romanian family now resident in Canada. At thirty, she is an unmarried and very successful career girl nagged daily by her mom to marry. Her friend Marie sets her up with a blind date: Louis, a young, equally ambitious police detective. Can love at first sight happen? It does for Jo and Louis, which is why she gave in to his rejection of reliable birth control after their fairytale wedding. Two unplanned pregnancies and two young children later, Louis shows his true colours. Will Joanna’s divorce run smoothly and allow her to move on and find her happily-ever-after with another man, or are the unsung victims to be her innocent children?
“Seeing the lawyer had set in motion the unraveling of what was left of my world” is just one sample of Ica Iova’s vivid writing as she sets out to untangle the threads of a pattern too many women recognise too late. Their man is not what he seems, but they don’t want to admit that to themselves, never mind the world. Louis is not only Joanna’s husband, he is the father of her children, and divorce is only the start of her troubles. After all, who will believe a frazzled woman over a policeman? Social workers? A judge? Unsung Victims is enjoyable to read for its clarity, its well-drawn characters, and its strong story, and it carries a powerful message from a very insightful author. Iva Iova is a writer to watch.
